Our next Manifest is a little less than one week away, on this Sunday, January 11th! This time it’s at WORM, so please don’t wander into the Roodkapje basement, as you’ll be there by yourself! Before each event I like to introduce you to the people who will be presenting, so you can get to know them and get excited about what type of animation they might be sharing.
Oana Clitan is someone whose work you’ve been seeing every single Manifest event. That’s because she is our unheralded graphic designer, and has been putting her creative talents to work designing every poster and banner each month!
Oana is Romanian and has been living in the Netherlands since 2012. She recently graduated from the AKV St Joost MA of Graphic Design course with a project about ‘Kitsch and Lettering as Visual Commentary.’
Oana’s artist statement: “In the past years I’ve been working with the concept and aesthetics of kitsch and with vernacular graphic production. I analyze, rearrange, reinterpret and recontextualise these elements so as to offer a new perspective on contemporary visual culture. I like to confront people with their preconceived notions of ‘good taste’ and ‘bad taste’. I’m also focusing on typography and lettering and the message they deliver in specific contexts.”
But my favorite thing of hers is her animated Gif words and alphabets. Here is a great example:
So you can see that Oana has a really eclectic view on ‘taste’. To give you a clue as to what type of animation she might present, this is something I know she likes. It gets really crazy around the 2:00 mark:
