Dinesh profileThe next Manifest: Animation Show & Tell is in just two days, Sunday evening, at WORM.  We’ve met Rowena Crowe and Oana Clitan, and now our third presenter, Dinesh van den Berg!

Dinesh is one of my classmates from the MA of Animation at St Joost in Breda. He is an illustrator and animator with a deep graphic novel background.  He has been working on Drakan, a dark and gory fantasy graphic novel since his time at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague on his Bachelor of Fine Arts, and his graduation project at St Joost was an animated trailer for this book:
“A graphic novel following the exploits of a crazed and violent warrior as he gathers his allies and challenges the might of a growing empire. The borders of myth and reality blur as Drakan encounters people who see him as a monster, a soldier and quite possibly a leader.”

“Dinesh  draws and writes stories which blend the sublime and epic mystics of ancient mythologies with the action and pace we see in today’s film and video games.  He creates characters which personify our deepest fears, dreams and potential.  He hopes to inspire people and reveal to them that the only real magic lies in our own imagination and our ability to create.”

Anyone who’s ever tried to make a comic knows that it’s hard.  I am really impressed with how Dinesh is able to take his drawing style up to 11 and really commit to it, in his comics and animation. And it’s nice to see someone use animation in a way that complements their existing style. I think Dinesh’s use of moving illustrations that are animated in After Effects really keeps the ‘comic book’ feel in his trailer.

Come to manifest to find out what Dinesh will present. Hint: it has to do with a popular TV show and Dinesh’s profile photo will give you a good idea which one.  See you on Sunday!
